Kurayoshi City

Geographically located as the doorway to the Central Tottori area, Kurayoshi is the main city of the region. During the Muromachi era the construction of Utsubuki castle started the development of the area. Surviving that time, located in the heart of the old district of Kurayoshi, is the Shirakabe Dozogun area, which lies along the Tamagawa River. Now situated mainly in the Akagawara area are many folk crafts, retro themed sites, and various other popular tourist attractions. Also, during the cherry blossom season, Utsubuki Park comes alive. For a treasure trove of traditional Japanese beauty, look no further than Kurayoshi.

Abandoned National Railway Tracks Tourist Information Center

This is a tourist information center near the abandoned Kurayoshi Line of the former Japan National Railways (JNR).

Daigakuin Temple

This renowned Soto Zen temple was founded in 1605. Within the grounds, you can find the graves of Satomi Awanokami Tadayoshi, the last lord of Tateyama Castle in Awa Province (Chiba Prefecture), and his eight loyal retainers, who served as models for the story 'Nanso Satomi Hakkenden.' Tadayoshi passed away at the young age of 29 but lived in Kurayoshi for eight years. During his time here, he is said to have donated the 'Sansairyoka Kokka Monban,' a beautifully crafted ceramic plate, which is still kept as a treasured item today.

Dairenji Temple

From 1573 to 1592, the monk Zenrenja Nenyoshonin Bun'o combined three Dairenji temples from the nearby area and established the new temple at its current location. The modern main hall, built with reinforced concrete, was reconstructed in 1955 and is one of the pioneering structures in the prefecture. It is also well-known as a temple connected to the warrior Wakiya Yoshisuke and the wealthy merchant Yodoya Seibe from Osaka.

Established in 1699 as the family temple for Arao Shima, a senior official of the Tottori Ikeda Domain, this temple is featured in the manga 'To a Distant Town' (by Jiro Taniguchi / Shogakukan), where the protagonist travels through time. A notable feature of Manshoji Temple is the 'Navagraha (nine heavenly bodies) Fortune-Telling Board,' a massive astrological board with a diameter of 8 meters. Using birth dates, it calculates stars to predict personality traits, love compatibility, and interpersonal relationships. It’s considered a power spot in Kurayoshi.

Dainichi-ji

According to temple tradition, this ancient temple was founded in 841 (Jōwa 8) by Ennin and later revitalized in 988 (Eien 2) by Genshin. It is said to have flourished as one of the major temples in the San'in region. Numerous clay sutras, considered to be among the oldest in Japan, have been excavated here, and the Amida Nyorai statue, designated as an important cultural property of the nation, is also preserved here. The Kokuchō Ato (site of the provincial office) dates back to the Nara and Heian periods and represents the remains of government offices from that era. The Hokkeji Bata Site was initially used as an administrative office and is believed to have been later repurposed as a provincial temple (Kokubun-ji). The Funioka Site is thought to have existed from the Nara to the Heian periods and may have served as a precursor to the provincial office or as a county office, later transitioning to a warehouse related to the provincial government. This pond is a reservoir built for irrigation of rice paddies, and although its official name is “Ookamidani Reservoir,” it was given the name “Daisen Pond” because of the reflection of Mt. Dausen. In summer, the pond is a popular camping site, and has been designated by the prefecture as “Inpaku no Meisui (Fureai no Mizuibe)” (famous water of Inpaku).

大江神社

Oe Shrine

This shrine, established in 1880 (Meiji 13), enshrines Lady Ōe Iwashiro, the birth mother of Emperor Kōkaku, the 119th emperor of Japan. Born in Minato-machi, Kurayoshi in 1744 (Teikyō 1), Lady Ōe Iwashiro went to Kyoto to serve Princess Naruko. When the princess married Prince Kan'in-no-miya Sukehito, Ōe became her lady-in-waiting. In 1771 (Meiwa 8), she gave birth to three imperial princes, including Emperor Kōkaku. She passed away in 1813 (Bunka 9) at the age of 69.

At the entrance to the temple path stands an ancient well called "Kiyosaki no Ido," which is tied to a legend of a celestial maiden who bathed there. It is said that when the celestial maiden ascended to the heavens, a large moonflower (yūgao) was in bloom. According to one version of the legend, she returned to the heavens by climbing the vine of this enormous moonflower, which is why the well later came to be known as "Yūgao no Ido" (Moonflower Well).

Abandoned Tracks of the National Railway Kurayoshi Line

The Kurayoshi Line of Japan National Railways was discontinued at the end of March 1985. The rails and platform remains even now, more than 30 years after its closure. A bamboo grove and bamboo growing between the rails, located about 200m west of the Taikyuji Station ruins, are popular as a photogenic spot. It is a 15-minute walk from the Abandoned Railway Tracks Tourist Information Center.

Unlike typical watermelons, which are grafted onto rootstocks like gourd, the Gokumi Suika is cultivated by grafting watermelon onto watermelon rootstock. This method is used to achieve the purest flavor and texture of the fruit. However, it is more labor-intensive, as this variety is susceptible to certain diseases and cannot be grown in the same spot repeatedly. Disaster Prevention Center Kurayojin

This building was constructed on the site of a previous structure that was destroyed by fire in 2003 (Heisei 15). It was restored with inspiration from Kurayoshi’s traditional merchant houses and now functions as a regional disaster prevention center. You can walk through the building, which features sculptures in its courtyard, and exit to the Tamagawa River. On weekends, it hosts agricultural product sales and is sometimes used as an art gallery. Admission is free, so feel free to stop by and explore!
