In Kiku Port, Kotoura Town, three stone sculptures by world-renowned sculptor Masayuki Nagare stand facing the rough waves of the Sea of Japan. These sculptures, made from white granite, are 4.33 meters tall and symbolize the "traveler's form" of old. They evoke deep emotions in each viewer and change their expression with the seasons—on clear days, rainy days, and stormy days—offering us hope and courage in life.

It is said that the name of Kiku Port is derived from "Kikuhime," who married into the Kawamoto family, the local village head, and was the daughter of the uncle of Matsue domain lord Horio Tadaharu. Just behind Kiku Port lies a townscape, which tells of the area's former prosperity centered around the port. Today, the famous sculpture "Nami Shigure Sandogasa" by world-renowned sculptor Masayuki Nagare stands facing the rough waves of the Sea of Japan.

The Kawamoto residence, designated as an Important Cultural Property by the national government, was confirmed to have been built in 1688 (Jōkyō 5) through an investigation of the ridge tag during the roof rethatching in 1978 (Shōwa 53).

Hanamigata Cemetery is a spontaneously formed cemetery concentrated in one coastal area. Such a large-scale burial site is extremely rare and is one of the largest in Japan, particularly for a coastal burial site. Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo), famous for his ghost stories, also visited and noted that he "felt a spiritual presence." There are over 20,000 graves, and during the Obon festival, lanterns are lit in the cemetery, casting their glow on Hanamizuki, creating a truly enchanting landscape.

The Iwafune Jizō of Yahashi in Hōki Province has long been cherished as a spiritual site for the living Jizō and holds a significant historical legacy.

In August of 1891, Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) and his wife Setsu visited this area. In 2003, marking the 100th anniversary of Koizumi Yakumo's death, a memorial monument was erected at Yabase Beach to commemorate their visit. Nearby is the former Nakai Ryokan, where Koizumi Yakumo stayed during his honeymoon and which he particularly liked.

The white sandy beach and emerald green sea, which even Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) admired, offer a breathtaking view. In the past, during the swimming season, it was bustling with families and young people, but currently, the beach is no longer open for swimming. In winter, you can see hundreds of black-tailed gulls gracefully flying overhead. It is well known that Lafcadio Hearn swam here, but at that time (1891, the 24th year of the Meiji era), Japanese people did not have the custom of sea bathing, so it is said that many people came to watch him swimming.

Sitting atop a gently elevated hill overlooking the Sea of Japan, Suwa Shrine is revered as the guardian shrine of Yahashi. Historically called Suwa Daimyōjin, it is said to have been founded in the 3rd year of the Jōgan era (861) when Emperor Seiwa invited the deity from Suwa in Shinano Province. The shrine was rebuilt in the 1st year of the Meireki era (1655) and became known as Suwa Shrine in the 5th year of the Meiji era (1872). It is affectionately called "Osuwa-san" by the local parishioners.

The exact founding date is unknown, but it has long been revered as the guardian deity of Kurasaka Village, originally known as Kokuishi Daimyōjin and Nyakuichi-ōjin. In the first year of the Meiji era (1868), it was renamed Kurasaka Shrine, and in the 5th year of Meiji (1872), it officially became Kurasaka Shrine. In 1915, it merged with Hitotsuya Shrine, bringing it to its current form.

The founding date is unknown. According to legend, around the late Heian period during the reign of Emperor Go-Shirakawa, a divine white fox messenger warned, "A famine is approaching soon. Store rice, cotton, and other supplies from now." In that year, the 2nd year of Kanki (1230), a great famine occurred. While many people died in Kyoto the following year, during the 3rd year of Kanki (1231), it is said that this region did not suffer.

The foundation of Toyosaka Shrine, according to the records of the Ikeyama family in Yamakawa, the former Akasaki town, dates back to July of the 2nd year of the Kaei era (1849).

Kamefukuzan Kōtokuji Temple was originally a Tendai sect temple located about one ri (approximately 4 kilometers) south of the current site in Noda. In the first year of the Eikyō era (1429) during the Muromachi period, the third generation Zen master, Kūen, from the Taikyuji Temple in Daisen Town, relocated it to the current site at Kumon Kamegaya and converted it to the Sōtō sect. At that time, the guardian of Izumo, Amago Mochihisa, devoted himself to Kūen and donated the main hall and the kitchen in the fifth year of Eikyō (1433), establishing it as a temple for the Amago clan's prayers. Subsequently, Mochihisa's son, Kiyosada, donated the founding hall, bell tower, and the temple gate in the third year of Kakitsu (1443).

Teiko Shiotani was a gifted photographer who continued taking photographs of San'in Region's nature and people during his lifetime. His works have been highly praised worldwide, as the solo exhibitions were held in U.S. and Europe. He is also known as the person who discovered the talent of Shoji Ueda, who was also known as the great photographer from Sakaiminato, Tottori. The building of the museum was remodeled from the merchant house where Teiko was born, and it has galleries, displays of his relics, and a cafe. (National Tangible Cultural Property)

The exact origin of Kanzaki Shrine is unknown, but it is said to have been founded in the late Muromachi period. The current main hall was constructed in 1848, during the first year of the Kaei era, by carpenters employed by the lord of the Tottori domain. The ceiling of the worship hall's entrance is adorned with carvings made from zelkova wood, so exquisite that it can be considered more of an art piece than architecture.

24 Houses of 48 in the Mitsu District of Kotoura Town have kote-e (plaster relief), which is rare throughout Japan to be grouped in a certain area. Plasters' auspicious artworks appear one after another.

"Kaze no Oka Park" has been recognized as a "Lover’s Sanctuary," making it a perfect romantic spot for proposals. The museum showcases the history of Japan-Korea exchange and Korean culture. There are some experience areas where visitors can touch and play with traditional Korean toys and musical instruments, and you can try on traditional Korean attire, "Chima Jeogori."

Thought of as the land of Emperor Godaigo, Mt. Senjo, as well as many other places in Kotoura have their names etched in history. Voted as one of Japan’s best waterfalls, Daisen falls, and the thousand year old tree, Kyoboku (big tree) are just some of the reasons that Kotoura is thought of as a place where one can experience enchanting natural beauty. If one faces north there lies the great blue Japan Sea. Its coasts boast the most fishing ports of the Sanin region, making the Akasaki area deluxe spot for those wanting to buy or eat fresh seafood. Truthfully, the blessing of the sea, and the mountains make Kotoura attractive on a grand scale.
