People in the Hiruzen area have been using controlled mountain burning Yamayaki, for around 800 years.
These intentionally set fires revitalizing and protecting the grassland. If the field burning has stopped completely, the grasslands will gradually turn into forests, and the rare species of flora and fauna such as Chinese bellflower, primrose colonies, and Fusahigeruikamiri(Agapanthia japonica) will no longer be able to survive there. Yamayaki, mountain burning is an essential tool to maintain the beautiful natural landscape of the Hiruzen.
Mountain fields have been vital resources for people to harvest materials to thatch roofs, etc. As modernization has progressed, the need to obtain materials from the grasslands has been decreasing, and the area of field burning has been decreasing recently.
In the Hiruzen area, the volunteer organization Yamayaki-tai(mountain burning team) continues to carry out steady activities to ensure the continuation of mountain burning, such as spring burnings and the creation of firebreaks in autumn.
