This natural mineral water springs from a valley at the foot of Mt Naka-Hiruzen (1,123 m), in the middle of the Hiruzen Three Peaks. The spring forms a gourd-shaped pond, 12 m east to west, and 5 m north to south, with an area of approximately 60 m2, with a depth of 1.9 m. A spring water volume of 300 liters flows each second, and the water temperature is around 11℃ all year round, which explains the name Cold Spring came from. In 1985, Shiogama Cold Spring was considered one of the 100 best waters in Japan (Ministry of the Environment). It is managed mainly by the local Shiogama Housankai Association, and the water is passed on as domestic water for the daily use of approximately 600 households in the area.
