Yurihama Town

Yurihama Town stretches around Lake Togo, which has a 12 km circumference. The town is named after its local features: hot springs rising from the lake, Nijisseiki Pear (Japanese 20th century pear) nurtured by the earth, and white sandy beaches along the Sea of Japan. Yurihama is home to two lakeside hot spring villages, Togo Onsen and Hawai Onsen. The "Togo-ichi Project" is recommended for an overnight stay, where visitors can enjoy scenic walks or bike rides around the lake and sample local gourmet food. The southern area is famous across Japan for its Nijisseiki Pear (Japanese 20th century pear). The Tomari area, once a post town, is a small fishing village that retains its original landscape and is also known as the birthplace of ground golf.

Kisui airport

The Kisui arport is lacated along the Togo lake in the center of Tottori prefecture.
We renovated a toy store warehouse that once stood on the shore of the brackish lake, we built a small approximately 10 square meters hut in the garden.
These days the hut is used as a gallery and an event space for various exhibitionshe hut is used as a gallery and an event space for various exhibitions.
We will mainly focus on new and old books, while also offering delicious chai, coffee, and a variety of other items.

Hawai Topographical Museum

Hawai Museum of Topography

The Hawai Museum of Topography is situated at the summit of Mt. Umano. This 107-meter-high mountain is home to one of the oldest and largest burial mounds in the San'in region, the Umanoyama No. 4 Burial Mound. It is also known as the site where Hideyoshi Hashiba, during his attack on Tottori Castle, set up camp on Mt. Gokan and faced off against Motoharu Kikkawa’s army. The museum is a five-story building designed to resemble haniwa (clay figurines) and castles. Inside, guests will find a variety of exhibits, from ancient history to astronomy. The top floor features a 360° panoramic view of the surrounding natural beauty, including the Sea of Japan, Lake Togo, and Mt. Daisen.

Mount Izumo

Mt. Izumo Observatory

Once upon a time, Princess Shitateru, the daughter of Okuninushi (Lord of Izumo Province), arrived at this place by sea from Izumo Province and resided in Shitori Shrine. The princess thought of her home province, and came to this hill to see Izumo, which is far away from this place. People knew how she was feeling, which led the place to be called Izumo-yama (Mt. Izumo).
Today, the mountain is maintained as an observatory, providing breathtaking views of Lake Togo, Hawai Onsen, and the stunning mountain ranges, including Mt. Daisen, a national park.

Ayameike Pond

Ayame Pond Park

Ayame Pond Park, located in Hawai Seaside Park, Lake Togo, opened in October 1979 with scenic views of the surrounding mountains. The park features around 30,000 vibrant hanashobu (Japanese irises) in white, purple, yellow, and more. Starting with cherry blossoms in late March, the park is filled with seasonal flowers such as wisteria, iris, hanashobu, water lilies, and tamano kanzashi. It is a beloved healing park, attracting many visitors throughout the year.

Chinese Garden　Enchoen

Chinese Garden Encho-en

Chinese Garden Encho-en was built in 1995 as a symbol of friendship between Tottori Prefecture and Hebei Province, China. This authentic garden was designed, sourced, and constructed entirely in China. It recreates the imperial gardens that were cherished by successive Chinese emperors. The roofs are adorned with yellow lapis lazuli tiles, symbolizing the emperor, and the buildings are decorated with over 2,000 colorful paintings, including a five-clawed dragon, crafted by Chinese artists. The park also hosts three daily performances of Chinese acrobatics, showcasing incredible skills. Additionally, it is growing in popularity as an ideal spot for Chinese cosplay.

Yuasis Togo Ryuhokaku

Ryuhokaku is a versatile spa and recreation facility that utilizes hot spring water from Togo Onsen, which flows from Lake Togo. The swimsuit area features 10 bathtubs, along with dry and mist saunas, and includes a 27-meter-long dragon slide and pool, perfect for both adults and children. The Chinese-style baths, which do not require swimsuits, are modeled after China's Huaqing Pool, known for the romantic tale of Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei, and can be easily enjoyed. Ueshi Castle Ruins

Ueshi Castle Ruins

Ueshi Castle Ruins are located on Mt. Ueshi, which stands 372 meters above sea level. A modern keep was built in 1990. At the summit, the ruins of koguchi (a castle entrance) and kuruwa (areas divided by earthworks, stone walls, and moats) have also been identified. The area is now maintained as a park, featuring an observatory, a parking lot, and restrooms at the trail entrance. From the castle ruins, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Yurihama Town and the Sea of Japan.

Shikaze no Oka Tomari

Shiokaze no Oka(Hill) Tomari

The Tomari area is the birthplace of ground golf. Shiokaze no Oka (Hill) Tomari is a dedicated ground golf course that opened in 1993, situated on a hill overlooking the Sea of Japan. The course features three layouts, each with eight holes of natural lawn: a cape course that juts into the Sea of Japan, an inner course offering panoramic views of Narisuna Beach, and an outer course that overlooks the entire park.
With simple rules, this sport can be enjoyed by all ages and has spread not only throughout Japan but also to many countries worldwide, boasting an estimated three million players. Tomari has become an increasingly popular destination for ground golf, hosting local and international tournaments, including junior competitions and birthplace tournaments.

Imadaki Waterfall

Imadaki(Waterfall)

Imadaki (Waterfall) boasts a height of 44 meters, with its cascading falls truly spectacular. The plants growing on the rock walls are considered highly valuable. A promenade and parking area have been developed, allowing visitors to enjoy nature observation and forest bathing. As a site where a mixture of Buddhism and Shintoism coexists, the Dragon King and Fudo Myoo are enshrined nearby. It’s a 200-meter walk from the parking area to the waterfall basin, with restrooms located approximately 150 meters away.

Fudoudaki Waterfall

Fododaki (Waterfall)

Fododaki (Waterfall) is a two-tiered waterfall that cascades from a height of approximately 32 meters over an andesite rock face. Since ancient times, it has been a place of worship for Fudo Myoo and is recognized as a site for ascetic practices. The waterfall opens on July 7th. It is considered a holy waterfall for men aged 42 and women aged 33, symbolizing a transformation from "yaku-doshi" (the age of misfortune) to "yaku-doshi" (the age of great leap forward).

Yotsude Ami (Four armed Scoop Net)

Yotsute Ammi (Four armed Scoop Net)

Yotsute Ammi (Four-Armed Scoop Net) is a unique fishing method found at Lake Togo. Bamboo poles are positioned at the four corners of a net, which is then raised and lowered using pulleys inside huts along the lakeshore. This technique is used to catch shrimp, small crucian carp, and other fish. At its peak, 24 or 25 nets were lined up along the Matsuzaki shore, but today, only two remain for tourism purposes, making them one of the distinctive features of Lake Togo. The scene at sunset is particularly beautiful, making it a popular photo spot.

Uno Jizo Daki (Waterfall)

Uno Jizo Daki (Waterfall)

In the Uno region, flowing from Mt. Uno is a waterfall that's gentle waters fall year round. A large rock bears the phrase, “namumyo horengekyou”, a Buddhist phrase meaning “glory to the sutra”. It is near that large rock that there is a natural spring whose water is rich in calcium, and good tasting. It was also selected as one of the great water in Tottori Prefecture.

倭文神社

Shitori Shrine

Shitori Shrine, as the Ichinomiya (primary shrine) of Hoki Province, is dedicated to seven deities, including Takehazuchi no Mikoto and Shitateruhime no Mikoto. Shitateruhime no Mikoto is also revered as the deity of safe childbirth. The shrine is believed to have been established to honor Takehazuchi no Mikoto, the ancestral deity of textiles, as the region was once home to many Shitori people who made a living through weaving.
According to legend, Shitateruhime no Mikoto, the daughter of Okuninushi no Mikoto, came from Izumo, settled in this area, and dedicated herself to promoting safe childbirth. Within the shrine grounds, there is a rock known as the "Safe Childbirth Rock." The annual festival is held on May 1st.

Hoki Ichinomiya Kyozuka (sutra mound) Excavation Artifacts (National Treasure)

The Hoki Ichinomiya Kyozuka (sutra mound) was believed to be the grave of Shitateruhime no Mikoto in ancient times, which led to repeated looting. In 1915, several people dug into the mound without permission and uncovered a copper sutra cylinder containing sutras, a gilt-bronze Buddha, a bronze mirror, a cypress fan, daggers, sword fittings, jade, copper coins, and lacquerware. The copper sutra cylinder, 42 cm tall, featured an inscription of 15 lines with 237 characters. It acted as a kind of time capsule, intended to preserve the sutras of Buddha's teachings for future generations. The excavated items were designated National Treasures in 1920 and are currently on display at the Tokyo National Museum. The sutra mound itself was also designated a National Historic Site in 1935.

On the eastern shore of the Uno area, there is a large rock resembling a turtle. Legend has it that long ago a goddess came from the sea on the back of a turtle, and was so captivated by the view from the land, that she forgot to return. The turtle, waiting for her to return, turned to into a large boulder.

Lake Togo

Lake Togo

The lake is said to look like a a bird with its wings spread open, and is called “bird lake” by some as a nickname. It is a brackish lake, whose circumference is 12km, its area is 4 square km, and a depth ranging from 2 to 7 meters. It is one “Sanin’s Eight Beautiful Sights”. Carp, clams, and other fish can be caught, and many ducks and other migrant birds come in the winter. Inside of the lake there is a natural hot spring. Utilizing these hot springs are Hawai Onsen on the western shore of the lake, and Togo Onsen on the southern side.

Ayugaeri no Taki Waterfall

Ayugaeri no Taki (Waterfall)

Ayugaeri no Taki (Waterfall) is a small waterfall located upstream of the Jumanji River in Ueshi. This three-tiered waterfall can be seen against the sheer rock faces on either side, creating a spectacular sight in harmony with the surrounding landscape. Even in mid-summer, the area remains dimly lit and refreshingly cool, and it is said to have once been a place where children played in the water. It is called Ayugaeri no Taki (the waterfall where ayu fish turn back) because the ayu fish cannot climb any higher.

When the celestial maiden descended to this land, she left her feather robe on a large rock known as "Yogoishi Stone" (also called "Hagoromoishi Stone"). A single footprint of the celestial maiden remains on this rock, and nearby, there is a small shrine.

Hagoromoike Pond

An explanatory board at the Hagoromoike Pond site describes it as a "tea water well." It is believed to have served as a precious drinking water source for the soldiers of Ueshi Castle in the past. The Ueshi Nanjoki (military records) states, "Fresh water gushes from the north cave, and even during drought, it never dries up." Legend has it that if all the water in this well is drained, a heavy rain will fall. Additionally, there is a legend that a celestial maiden used to bathe in this well.

Miyado Benten

Miyado Benten

A large rock and torii gate stand on the north-western shore of Lake Togo, near Shitori Shrine. This spot is called Miyado Benten, and it enshrines one of the Seven Benten of Miyauchi. Benten-sama is said to symbolize beauty and was once highly revered for bestowing wealth, wisdom, and long life. In the past, Miyado was an island, but over time, it became connected to the mainland. According to legend, a white snake served as the messenger of Shitateruhime no Mikoto, the deity of Shitori Shrine.

Michino Eki (Rest stop) Hawai

August 2003, aoya Sanin expressway opened in Hawai road (Route 9). The specialty farmers, restaurants and convenience stores, the city and are used as an oasis for tourists and the driver. Fine views of Lake Togo and China mountains in the South to the North in the Japan Sea, and thoroughly enjoy a scenic landscape of Oyama.

Aloha Monument

The former Hawai Town established sister city relations with Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA, in November 1996, due to the shared name. In October 2004, Hawai Town merged with other municipalities to form Yurihama Town, but the exchange has continued. The Aloha Monument was erected to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the merger.
The word Aloha is a Hawaiian greeting meaning hello, goodbye, thank you, and more. It also embodies the spirit of compassion, respect, and love—an openness to all. The monument symbolizes the hope that Hawaii County, Yurihama Town, and all visitors to this area will be united by the spirit of Aloha, with their bonds enduring forever.

Nagase Takahama Iseki (Ruins)

Nagase Takahama Iseki (Ruins) is a vast complex of archaeological sites spanning from the Yayoi Period to the Middle Ages, where a number of significant discoveries have been made. The most remarkable of these is the unearthing of a large number of haniwa (clay figurines) from locations outside of burial mounds. These early haniwa are shaped like items such as armor, houses, shields, and indigo plants. (Typically, haniwa are in the form of humans or animals.)

Lake Togo Shijimi (freshwater clam) is known for its large size and exceptional flavor, making it a unique specialty of this brackish lake. Particularly, the Lake Togo Shijimi is referred to as "black diamonds" due to its size and beautiful sheen.
Fresh clams possess a delightful, firm texture, and when frozen, their umami flavor is reported to increase by up to eight times compared to fresh clams. The peak seasons for these clams occur in summer, just before spawning, known as "Doyo shijimi," and in winter, when they grow in cold water, referred to as "Kan shijimi (cold shijimi)."

Nokyobungo (plum) is a large, oval, thick-fleshed plum that is a specialty of the Togo area in Yurihama Town. The fruit can grow up to 5 cm in diameter. From mid to late March, the plum orchards are adorned with pale pink flowers, releasing a sweet, soft fragrance. Green plums are harvested in early June, while fully ripe plums are shipped around June 20. This folk dance has been continued in Matsuzaki for 400 years. This dance is to to honor samurai, though its roots come from a dance honoring Buddha. Kitayama Kofun Ancient Tomb

Kitayama Kofun (Ancient Tomb)

In 1980, the site was designated as a national ruin, and in the Sanin region, it is the largest of its kind. The rear of the tomb is 110 meters long with a diameter of 70 meters, and a height of 12 meters. The front area is 56meters long and 11 meters high. Thought to have been built in the early 5th century, and being a burial ground, jewels, copper mirrors, and jade pipe, etc were discovered as well.

Ancient tombs located throughout the hills of Banoyama. Consists of 24 tombs and 14 of them have been designated as national historic sites. Hashizu-hansou(domain warehouse)

Designated as a protected cultural heritage by the prefecture. At Edo period, the warehouse was used by the Tottori domain to collect and store rice tribute. During that period, 15 domain warehouses aligned side by side in Hashizu and had the capacity to stored aboute 50,000bags of rice tribute.
The rice tribute rice was transported to Osaka by large-cargo ships, suporting the finances of Tottori domain. Nowadays, three storehouses known as "Kogura", "Katayamagura" and "Sanjuuken-kitagura" remain, reflecting the conditions of that era.

Matsuo shrine

During Kamakura period, because the area around lake Tougo was part of Matsuo Grand shrine in Kyouto it is believed to have been stablished enshrining a divine spirit. The present main hall was built in the third year of Homuro period(1706) and served as a place of prayer of Nanjou family in Muromachi period. In November 9th, 1562 it recieved a donation of 75 koku of land from Nanjou Motochiyo. Since ancient times, it has been revered as a God of sake brewing. thats why every year a sake making festival is held on December 13th.
