The mountain forms a major part of the Higashi Daisen mountain range and stands at an elevation of 615 meters. The summit is a broad, flat lava plateau, but the upper slopes to the east, west, and north are lined with nearly vertical cliffs. It is an ideal spot for hiking and mountain climbing, taking approximately 40 minutes to reach the summit. It is also the place where Emperor Go-Daigo's Kenmu Restoration started and has been designated as a national historic site. The mountain is included in Japan’s list of the 100 best spots for autumn foliage. It has also been designated as Daisen-Oki National Park.

Daisen Waterfall, selected as one of "Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls" in 1990, was originally a three-tiered waterfall until the early Showa period, but it became a two-tiered waterfall due to a massive flood. The waterfall's current shape was further altered by the collapse caused by Typhoon Talas in 2011. A walking trail has been developed from Ikkoganaru, and the route with a crossing a suspension bridge is a popular hiking course. It takes about one hour each way. Visitors can also descend to the waterfall basin using a rope.

Located along National Route 9, the Roadside Station Port Akasaki has a large parking area, a direct sales market for locally sourced seafood and agricultural products, a convenience store, a dining area, and a children's playground. On the east side, there is the Japan-Korea Friendship Park "Kaze no Oka" and the Japan-Korea Friendship Museum, where you can learn about the history between Japan and Korea.

The "Great Shii Tree of Hōki," which stretches its branches like an arch over the approach to Kasuga Shrine, is a giant tree over 1,000 years old. It stands about 15 meters tall, with a branch spread of about 22 to 30 meters, and a trunk circumference of 11.4 meters. It was designated as a national natural monument in 1937 and selected as one of Japan’s 100 famous trees in 1990.

This site is the remains of a temple from the early Nara period and the Haikuhō era, and it is the only nationally designated special historic site in the San'in region that follows the Hōryū-ji style of temple layout. The site covers an area of 160 meters east to west and 250 meters north to south, featuring the remains of pagodas, the main hall, lecture hall, middle gate, corridors, and moats, with the foundation and stone pillars hinting at its historical significance. Many fragments of clay figures have been excavated around the site of the main hall (stored in the Kotoura Town Historical and Folklore Museum), including a tall six-foot Buddha statue and smaller clay figures, believed to have been housed in the main hall. The head of the Buddha, measuring 14 cm in height, is a small figurine with an elegant expression and a gentle demeanor; the original piece is housed in the Kyoto National Museum.

The Tenpōrin-ji Temple, located in Bekku, is a Tendai sect temple. Aaccording to its tradition, it was founded by Jikaku Daishi during the Shōwa era (834–848). It is said that in the second year of Tenroku (971), Saint Kūya visited this place and passed away here the following year. Emperor En'yū of that time built a single temple structure in honor of Saint Kūya's virtuous deeds, where a statue of Kūya was enshrined. This structure later became the main hall of Tenpōrin-ji Temple. In 2010, it was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. Kūya is said to have been the son of Emperor Daigo.

Along national route 9 in the town of kotoura, is lined with many stores.
